This week Revo headed to Germany on a mission, a mission to break a World lap record. Our destination was the Nurburgring Nordshleife (AKA “Green Hell”), considered to be the Holy Grail for motorsports enthusiasts across the world. The 12.9 miles of asphalt ebs and flows through the hillside forests of Nurburg, making it the most spectacular and exciting race tracks for drivers and spectators alike.
Back in 2010 Sabine Shmitz set the record for the fastest lap for a commercial vehicle around the Nurburgring in a Ford Transit van, with a respectable 10:08 'bridge to gantry' run. She did however use the slipstream of a Dodge Viper to aid her attempt by 'cleaning' the air in front of the van during the lap. This got us thinking, and a few short weeks later we'd hatched a plan.
In conjunction with Transporterland.com and Dunlop tyres, we set about building a Volkswagen T5 Transporter van to beat Sabine's record. Not wanting to go too over the top with our modifications we kept things simple and decided not to change the standard engine. With the addition of Revo stage 2 software, a custom Milltek turbo back exhaust system, with their DPF delete pipe fitted, and a Forge intercooler and oil cooler we increased the power of the 2.0l bi-turbo diesel engine from 180bhp to a much more capable 220bhp. Handling was taken care of with a set of Bilstein B14 coilovers, 18” Team Dynamics wheels and Dunlop Direzza 03G tyres Everything else on the van remained standard! We could have taken things further (and maybe will) but this was a van which we needed to drive the 491 miles from Revo HQ in Daventry to Nurburg, set the lap record then drive back again, so reliabilty was key.
We met up with over driver for the attempt, Dale at Rent4Ring and Bridgetogantry.com who would be piloting the T5 around the ring. RaceLogic Video VBOX set up, he flashed his drivers wrist bands at the marshals on the gate and set off on his sighting lap. Just over ten minutes later he came thundering down the start/finish straight with the T5 pinned at full throttle, our team radios were crackling away with a buzz of excitement from our spotters at various corners of the track: "That van is FLYING!", "He's just overtaken a BMW!" - we were tense and excited.
Only three laps later, with no tracking vehicle to follow, Dale pulled in to the paddock so we could check the van over before sending him back out to chase the record. However, unbelievably, on replaying the VBOX details we had already broken the magic 10 minute mark on his third lap out- clocking a record setting full lap (not just the bridge to gantry loop) at 9.57.38. Arguably we shaved at least 35 seconds off the bridge to gantry time that Sabine had previously set.
That officially makes the Revo T5 Transporterland.com 2.0L bi-turbo the quickest production commercial vehicle to lap the Nurburgring Nordshleife in the world.
